Bell's Larry's Latest Double IPA Trial

Bell's Brewery   Kalamazoo, MI

Appearance:  Pours an amberish orange, a vibrant deep tone...it was poured with little head, but when I swirl it around, it shows some life...fairly transparent, it's really got a nice hue about it...

Smell:   Orange & mandarin highlighted citrus hops...there's a real piney quality as well...malts are toasted and mildly sweet...well balanced, but not pungent...

Taste:  More citrus hops, orange and mandarin with a distinct piney bite...toasted, candy sweet malts...it's a very sweet flavor, almost barley wine sweet...somewhat boozy...earthy bitterness resonates throughout...

Mouthfeel:  Light to medium body, medium carbonation...fluffs up bringing a toasted, sweet boozy flavor to the palate...this thing feels a lot like a barley wine...earthy/piney bitterness lingers in the after taste...

Overall:  It's definitely has a unique flavor...while they hops flavor & bitterness are apparent, it's a balanced brew that is almost more malt than hops...almost...think sweet, citrus/pine resin and you have this brew...there's no hiding the higher ABV with this one either...day drinkers beware!

Score:  4/5
