Goose Island Christmas Ale 2011

Goose Island Brewing Co.   Chicago, IL

Notes:
Christmas/Winter Seasonal Ale
12oz Bottle
Brewed 10/11, drank 11/12
6.2% ABV

Appearance:  Pours a deep reddish brown…light khaki head forms to about a finger width thickness, then slowly dissipates…very cloudy center with tons of yeast sediments settling to the bottom…(3.5/5)

Smell:  Dark fruit and brown sugar sweetness…not overly hoppy…malts reign supreme here, but overall, this isn’t an overly aromatic brew…(3.25/5)

Taste:  Sweet sugar and malt dominate…tastes of caramel, brown sugar, spices (cinnamon and nutmeg), dark fruits (raisin-like), some toasted malts…definitely some good flavor here, certainly a traditional Christmas ale…I can taste a bit of the alcohol…(3.5/5)

Mouthfeel:  Medium body, with nice carbonation…sweet, wet feel on my palate...does leave my mouth watering and wanting more…(3.75/5)

Overall:  I drank this brew on 11/2/12, while it was bottled on 10/21/11, so it’s just over a year old…I bought two, one for now, one for later and am excited to see where this beer goes in a year or two from now…the flavor is very sweet, the malts are full and tasty, the alcohol content is noticeable, but not too dominant…it’s like a liquid Christmas treat for the mouth…it’s a very drinkable beer that can be enjoyed all night…for a Christmas ale, this is somewhat standard fare leaving me curious to how age will change the overall product….(3.5/5)

Score:
(3.53/5)
