Woodstock Inn Thru Hiker Rye P.A.

Woodstock Inn Brewery   North Woodstock, NH

Notes:
Rye Pale Ale
22oz Bottle
7.9% ABV

Appearance:  Pours a very lively orangey, amber color…tons of bubble action in the middle…head is off white, finger thick and a noticeable mix of big bubbles and creamy small bubbles…this thing looks fantastic! (4.25/5)

Smell:  Wow, a blast of lemon zest and astringency…very much like a can of Pledge…it’s very lively, if an aroma could “sparkle”, this one is doing it…the lemon zest and a floral bitterness snap in my nose, while all that astringency comes with a rye peppery bite…there’s a sweet, doughy malt aroma…it’s intriguing, very unique and a little off putting all at the same time…a memorable smell…(3.25/5)

Taste:  Whoa! This is something different…I wouldn’t have thought it was possible to match the nose in flavor, but they’ve done it here…as soon as the brew hits my tongue, I’m feeling lemon zest, sourness and a blast of astringency…almost like a sparkling floral/piney bitterness in there as well…sweet malts play a background role, there isn’t as much rye bite as I would have hoped…I do taste a bit of yeast…the flavor is overpowered with lemon and floral astringent bitterness…a very odd flavor…(2.5/5)

Mouthfeel:  Light to medium body, with light carbonation…it does fluff up a bit covering my palate in tart, sour, astringent lemony bitterness…there’s a white wine dryness about it as well…fairly crisp and light with lemon and perfume floral bitterness lingers well into the after taste…(3/5)

Overall:  This is a unique brew to say the least…I’m not sure why they went so strongly towards a medicine taste, but it’s far too strong to be something that I could consider having more than one of…maybe ever…if there was a bit more malt taming things, this would be a lot better…if you are feeling frisky, give this a pull, but you’ve been warned…this thing is awkward from beginning to end…(2.5/5)

Score:
(2.99/5)
