Pipeworks Brewing Co. Chicago, IL
Notes:
English I.P.A.
22oz Bottle
7.0% ABV
Appearance:
Pours a golden caramel with a couple orange hues…it’s a very creamy,
dense caramel color…not transparent at all…a nice off white head formed and
settles to a thinner layer…but when I swirl it a bit, it thickens right back
up…a very inviting brew…(4.25/5)
Smell: Wow,
that is very light and fresh and mouth watering…I’m getting mango, pineapple,
kumquat (!!!), tangerine, mandarin…tropical without being flowery…just a hint
of pepper bite…maybe a little white/green grape…some pale/sweet/light caramel
malts in the back rounding things off…it’s refreshing and flavorful without
being pungent…again, very inviting…(4.35/5)
Taste: Starts
very muted, nothing really explodes onto the tongue right away…the flavor
definitely builds, it’s actually a bit watery at first and really only catches
flight in the after taste…flavor-wise though, I get pale/light/caramel malts up
front…it’s very soft and really hits the front of my tongue…the front of my
mouth is watering…after I swallow the first sip, I get a strong citrus
(orange/pineapple)/piney resin bite that covers my tongue in the back…two very
distinct flavors and reactions happening in my mouth – light, sweet and wet
caramel malt in the front and zesty, mildly bitter citrus/piney hops in the
back…the citrus/piney hops taste fresh, zesty and slightly robust…it’s a great
taste that lingers well into the after after taste…one good drink lasts a few
minutes…(4.4/5)
Mouthfeel:
Light body, light to medium carbonation…it does fluff up a bit bringing
citrus (lemon/orange/pineapple) bitterness and zest to the party…it’s almost
watery but has an undeniable chewiness to it that saves it from
despair…citrus/piney bitterness lingers well into the after taste leaving a
wonderful flavor to chew on…(4/5)
Overall: This
is a good brew, definitely worth the price tag, $8.99 for a bomber…west coast
APA and IPA influenced, there’s tons of citrus/piney/resinous hop flavor to
satisfy any hop heads’ hop craving…the texture of this brew is kinda weird and
is really the only downside…it’s almost like drinking a black and tan with it’s
contrast of light and robust all in one sip…very drinkable, buying a couple of
these from the Binny’s in Lakeview and dragging them over to your local
bro-fest is a great idea…Pipeworks is a newish beer company from Chicago that
is growing in regional/national notoriety for producing solid brews and with
good measure…this being my first toe dip into their waters, I can say that they at
least have a clue to what a good brew should do…highly recommended! (4.5/5)
Score:
(4.29/5)
