Notes:
Amber/Chile Ale
12oz Bottle
6.4% ABV
This is a contract brew by Minhas Craft Brewery in Monroe, WI for 5 Rabbit Cerveceria...i did some google research about this company and it's a large scale contract brewery that produces beers under different names, such as Rhinelander, and for companies like Trader Joes's directly...i typically don't like or appreciate the contract brews very often, we'll see how this one goes...
Appearance:
Pours a deep mahogany/amber…dark and dense, not overly transparent…off
white head formed and thinned to a nice layer covering the top…it’s got a bit
of Belgian yeast life, mildly, but it’s there…it does take the look of a flat
beer after about 15 minutes…(3/5)
Smell: Tons of
dark fruit sweetness with almost a holiday ale aroma…dark cherry, fig, raisin,
malts, earthiness, chocolate, caramel, spices…it’s got a nice smell though it’s
not overly aromatic…(3.5/5)
Taste: Classic
amber ale up front, sweet/dark/roasted malt flavor, pretty average…but what
happens next is what makes this ale different…there is a rush of chili pepper
that starts from the back of the throat and touches the outside of my tongue…it
does add some unique flavor, but it’s really only trying to improve an average
amber beer and frankly it doesn't…(2/5)
Mouthfeel:
Light to medium body, tons of carbonation…fluffs up bringing more chili
spice to the palate, really setting things on fire…ends sweet and finishes
spicy medium…(3/5)
Overall: Here's another example of mediocre contract brews that are
flooding the market...as the craft beer industry grows, more of these
types of beers will be out there...while it's a different take on an amber ale, it's nothing that I hope catches on...to me, the overall flavor of the beer relies to heavily on the chili pepper leaving me wanting something else mostly…I definitely couldn’t drink more than one in a sitting as my gut would get an ulcer I think…I’m not even sure I’m gonna
finish the one I have now…it’s interesting but not worth your precious drinking
time…i'm gonna keep an eye out for beers that come from Monroe, WI...this is the second time in a couple of days that i've had a contract brew from there (Boatswain Double I.P.A.) and both were not very good...the beer industry is interesting once you start scratching the surface...(2/5)
Score:
(2.68/5)
