Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye 2013

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.   Chico, CA

Notes:
Rye Ale
12oz Bottle
6.6% ABV
55 IBUs

From their website:

Rugged and resilient, rye has been a staple grain for ages and its spicy black pepper-like flavor has been prized by distillers and brewers for centuries. Rye thrives in the harshest conditions and comes to life in Ruthless, a spicy and rugged IPA with fruity, citrus and herbal hop notes balanced with the dry spiciness of the rye, making the beer aggressive yet comforting to bolster against whatever the winter winds may bring.

Appearance:  Pours a fairly transparent caramel amber brown color…a thin layer of off white, tiny bubble head formed and remains…nice lacing…(3.75/5)

Smell:  Tons of peppery rye up front…floral hops bitterness, citrus, cereal grains, pale malts…very well rounded aroma…(4/5)

Taste:  Much like the nose…peppery rye up front and throughout…pale malts, cereal grains and some hops bitterness coming through in the middle phase…finish has subtle citra hops flavor…it’s got a nice sweetness about it…very drinkable and flavorful…(4/5)

Mouthfeel:  Light body with light carbonation…watery, crisp, refreshing…finishes with a mild spicy bitter dryness…(3.25/5)

Overall:  A very sessionable brew…it’s got nice peppery flavor that’s complimented perfectly by pale malts and cereal grains…I was surprised to see that the citrus flavor involved here comes from citra hops, which seems to be infecting every new or seasonal beer coming out right now…no sign of the 6.6% ABV, a credit to the brew’s dynamic flavor…this beer has grown on me since I opened it and I’m glad I have another in the fridge…I found the flavor to be more abundant and peppery as it warms…yum! (4/5)

Score:
 (3.80/5)
